Providenciales Community Event: 2016 Move-A-Thon
Adopting a Healthy Start on Providenciales for 2016 with the Move-A-Thon Community Event
People make all kinds of New Year’s resolutions: stop smoking, eat healthier, get fit.
But one woman in the Turks and Caicos Islands not only pledged to herself to lose weight and get healthier, but she has organized a Providenciales community event that inspires others to make health resolutions and to keep them.
Annual Move-A-Thon TCI
The January 9th Move-A-Thon on Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos Islands is a community event that is the brainchild of Tamika Handfield, an island nutritionist who provides nutritional counselling and education to her community. The popular annual event raises monies for Handfield’s non-profit organization Nutrition in Demand whose mission is to heighten awareness of the importance of healthy eating towards a healthier, longer life.
This year the Move A Thon event is celebrating its fifth year, and if previous events are anything to go by, it will be very well attended. Registration has been filling up since opening in November, and excitement is building on the island.
Who is Tamika Handfield?
Handfield inspires many. She made significant changes in her lifestyle to eat more healthy and to lose weight, but she didn’t stop there. After completing a Masters Degree in Dietitics and Nutrition from Florida International University, she returned to her native home to give back to her community by lecturing, counselling and inspiring others towards better nutrition and healthy living.

Move-A-Thon 2016 – Getting Registered for the Event
The Move-A-Thon invites participants to either walk, run or bike a 5K, 10K or Half Marathon route. Registration fees are $20 for adults and $10 for children age 11 and under. There are also group discounts. For example, a group of 10-15 will be given 10% off their fees. The event kicks off very early at 6:00 am at Children’s Park, Lower Bight Road.
While there are tangible awards given out like medals for those placing in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, it’s the health rewards, camaraderie and enjoyment that prove to be the real rewards at the end of the day.
The event is a great way to kick off the day, and afterwards there is a huge health fair held on the grounds. Participants come from a variety of medical fields to share their expertise and insights about a whole range of health and nutrition topics. Food and beverages are free to all those attending.
Villa del Mar
With its Early Bird Special rates available until February 7, 2016, Villa del Mar hopes that if you can’t make it to the Turks & Caicos Islands for this healthy event, that you will be inspired to come to TCI and put your own health resolutions to work.
It’s January. A brand new year has only begun. The Turks and Caicos Move-A-Thon is the ideal to get a “running start” towards good health and “set in motion” the fulfillment of personal goals.
