Kadrica Hamilton is Changing the Face of Fashion in the Turks and Caicos Islands
Villa del Mar Sponsors Debut Fashion Collection
It’s not every day that a young woman gets the chance to be involved with the Miss Universe pageant.
But for one young fashion designer in the Turks and Caicos Islands, it’s a dream come true.
Kadrica Hamilton was born on the island of Providenciales and has had a passion for fashion since high school. After graduation she followed her heart and enrolled in a fashion degree program at the American Intercontinental University in Atlanta, Florida.
While a keen interest in fashion took her away from her home, Kadrica has returned to the Turks and Caicos – amidst rave reviews – to pursue fashion design.
“I find my greatest motivation to succeed through my younger sister”, comments Kadrica who aspires to be a good role model and source of inspiration for her sibling. In fact, Kadrica’s debut clothing collection, JAD (pronounced jade) is actually an acronym of the initials of her younger sister.
Recently Kadrica was selected for a feature piece in “Nirvana”, a new Jamaican fashion publication. The media exposure provided a wonderful moment along the young designer’s journey.
“It was a mind-blowing experience”, commented Kadrica.
The launch of her design collection through publication gave her some national exposure. But when one of her designs was worn recently by a Miss Universe participant, Shwazna Adams, from the Turks and Caicos, Kadrica’s talent was seen on the world stage. Shwazna wore a striking black and white leather dress which quickly caught the attention of photographers on site.
While her designs garnered positive response, Kadrica was thrilled just with the opportunity to take on the project itself, “I was asked to produce a mini collection of everyday wear for Miss Turks and Caicos” said Kadrica “it was exciting and encouraging that the committee offered the opportunity to me, a local designer, for such a prestigious event as Miss Universe”.
Thrilled with the offer of a new project, Kadrica was off and running. But like any young aspiring designer, support was vital. A local successful hotel facility provided that assistance. Villa Del Mar Resort on Providenciales, recipient of the Trip Advisor 2013 Certificate of Excellence, sponsored Kadrica’s mini collection.
Her designs are available for purchase. Kadrica describes the collection as “modern and sexy”. She creates with attitude and boldness. She wants to “unleash the sassy side of every woman”.
For Kadrica Hamilton, the dream is slowly taking shape. What were once only ideas on the design table are now clothing articles on the rack.
