The Jump Fence Crew Turks & Caicos Islands
Acrobatic Stunts in the Turks & Caicos Islands
A beautiful stretch of Caribbean beach….
For some folks it’s perfect for just lying back and relaxing.
For the younger set, it means a chance to build that sandcastle while the more adventurous might want to go beach combing for that unique souvenir.
And then there are those who think the best way to enjoy it is to backflip off a cliff.
For some talented young men in the Turks and Caicos Islands, known as The Jump Fence Crew, performing acrobatics is the ideal way to enjoy the sand and surf.
The Jump Fence Crew, Turks & Caicos
The group was formed by brothers Justin and Jason Okoye who hail from Runaway Bay, St. Ann Jamaica. They practice a sport called free running which started in 2003 in France. The activity originally called parkour has its roots in military obstacle training and involves travelling from one point to another in the most efficient way which can include vaulting, running, jumping, swinging, rolling or other movements. Free running, which The Jump Fence crew members do, is more an expression of fluid movement, self expression and for aesthetic value more than efficiency.
Justin and Jason moved to Grand Turk when they were in their teens and attended HJ Robinson School. In their spare time, they watched free running videos and devoted hours to practicing each move. Their gym was the beach and the boardwalk where they created and tested out their form and style. Justin and Jason critiqued each other and along with friend Devano Pierre perfected some impressive moves.
The Jump Fence Crew is gaining recognition through its internet presence. Justin and Jason have a passion for photography and cinematography and have created a number of videos on You Tube showcasing not only their free running abilities but also their flair for capturing images with sound. It’s like watching music videos where the dance moves are replaced with exhilarating flips, cartwheels and joyful vaults from walls, rocks and stairwells. Recently Justin and Jason were asked by Konk Apparel Turks and Caicos to promote their clothing brand. The video features the two young free runners clad in Konk shirts and hats performing their stunts around island sites.
Next time you visit the beaches and boulevards of Grand Turk Island you might spot these energetic fellows who immediately enhance any setting they enter. It’s best to have easy access to your camera though because these able acrobats move quickly and jump over more than fences!
Konk Apparel is sold at Blue Surf Shop in Saltmills Plaza and at the Palm Shops on Princess Drive.
