Chalk Sound Kayaking a Beautiful Provo Experience
Visitors Get a Unique Perspective when Kayaking Chalk Sound in the Turks and Caicos
The island of Providenciales offers many diverse kayak adventures, but Chalk Sound kayaking at the southwestern part of the island provides an inspiring and unique one-with-nature experience.
About a 20 minute drive southwest of Villa del Mar just past the Five Cays Settlement near Providenciales Airport, Chalk Sound is a natural lagoon almost completely landlocked. There is very little effect from tidal movement and rain gets filtered by the surrounding vegetation before it trickles into the sound. As a result, the water of Chalk Sound is extremely clear. Visitors are always startled by its beauty.
“It has the most incredible blue water; so strangely beautiful that you can’t help but stare,” commented a TripAdvisor reviewer.
Kayaking Chalk Sound is ideal even for the beginner paddler. The water is shallow, about four feet in most areas. If you stand up it would only reach your shoulders. Not only that, but water conditions are kayak-friendly.
“The water is super calm and so very easy to kayak, and manoeuvring around the little islands is very easy as there is plenty of space between them to kayak through,” said another Trip Advisor reviewer.
To protect its significant natural beauty Chalk Sound has been given National Park status. Motorized watercraft are strictly prohibited. Kayakers can paddle through the lush mangrove network and experience the Turks and Caicos in a very personal way without the background buzz of motorboats and jet skis. All you’ll hear is the splash of your own paddles and the sounds of nature all around you. There are numerous tiny cays that dot the sound and are home to an array of amazing creatures like the rock iguana, the endangered sea turtle or the laughing gull named for its high-pitched laugh.
Neptune Villas, located on Chalk Sound Drive, is one of the more popular kayak rentals on Chalk Sound. It’s best to reserve ahead. A single kayak will cost you $25 for the first hour; a double kayak will cost $35 for the first hour and $10 each additional hour. If you prefer a guided tour, Big Blue Unlimited provides kayak rentals as well kayak eco-tours and snorkel and kayak adventures.
An up-close encounter with nature in the heart of Providenciales is only a short paddle away.
